Summary
The dealer shuffles the cards skillfully,
once,
twice,
hands them to the men placing their bets into a pool of uncertainty. Whispering sweet lies only the blessed hear. One of these men happen to be John,
Another one is fate,
The last, at the end of the table, is a rather strange man.
Destiny.

Dutch Van Der Linde walks away.
He's done so many times over the years, he likes to think he is good at it. He walks away from a bad hand, a foolish argument, a poor investment. Dutch Van Der Linde cuts his losses, and he walks away a freer man than before.
---

Summary
Hosea, with hands that know a lot more and a heart that feels things more wisely, even if the man insists he's nothing but a lucky fool. Competitive or self-conscious, Dutch lays a hand on one of Arthur's that's splayed on the grass.

Summary
That’s when he hears it. A piercing squeal like a whistle that cuts through the noise of the crowd and the animals like a knife. It comes from the horse pens, where a crush of animals are churning up the mud in a panic. John knows the sound from long ago, and he doesn’t want to believe it.
John Marston is doing just fine. That's what he tells himself, anyway. He has his family and his ranch the way he always wanted, and he does just peachy - so long as he doesn't think about the man who made it happen. Things change when, at a livestock auction in Valentine, John stumbles across one of Arthur's old horses and knows he can't go home without her. With the ugly and vicious mare in tow, he begins to think back to the life he once had - and remember the man he needs to grieve.
John has a lot to learn about life, and maybe that goddamn horse is the one to teach him. Or, maybe it's the wonder that is Abigail Roberts.
