AJ has been through hell and back in her short lifetime, she had lost family, gained family then lost some more, before she decided that she refused to let other people be the cause of any more destruction in her life. she was gonna take her fate into her own hands and if the universe couldn't deal with that then tough. she was getting to formula 1 without losing anyone else, and nothing was gonna stop her. why? because she had made a promise, and AJ NEVER broke her promises.
she didn't need to add to her circle, yes it was small but the less people you cared about the less people could be taken from you. she didn't need to make new friends and she definitely didn't need anyone finding out anything about her life, there are 2 people in the world who know any considerable amount of her story, and she was one of them. she didn't need the pity of her fellow drivers.
Daniel Ricciardo had never met a person he didn't click with in his life, he was a master at bringing people out of their shells. just look at what he had accomplished with max, he was not about to let AJ defeat him. the kid was just quiet and shy right? that's what he believed too until he began to notice the small details.

She closed her eyes as she tumbled against the earth, the weight of the impact crushing the halo above her and slamming her body with 50 Gs of force. She couldn't move, couldn't breath as the car flipped again. The vision was bright and then dark, then bright again. She should have focused, tried to remember her training on how to get out and how to survive when the car finally stopped. But all she could do was remember his face and recite his name like a prayer and a goodbye.
