"Can you remind my brother that we were supposed to get lunch?” Maddie asks.
“Uh sure,” Eddie says slowly, confused. “But why don’t you just call him yourself?”
“I did, a couple times, but he didn’t answer. I assumed he was still with you?”
Eddie thinks back to last night, to Buck specifically making plans to go back to his own place so he wouldn’t be late for lunch with Maddie. Buck had texted him when he got home, just a simple night :) that still made Eddie’s heart flutter, so obviously Buck had made it back to the loft… But there haven’t been any texts from Buck all morning. Not that that is necessarily unheard of, but especially over the last few weeks it’s become rarer and rarer for even a few hours to go by without Eddie’s phone dinging with a message notification from Buck.
A small tendril of worry curls around Eddie’s ribs.

Summary
Everyone seems to think that Buck doesn’t understand that being the donor is a far cry from being the dad. But he does. He really does. There’s a hierarchy in his head around his roles as donor and backup relative to his dream of being a dad.
Donor just means DNA. He’s helping his friends. Maybe he’ll get updates or even be allowed around on occasion as the “Cool Uncle,” but that is it. It’s not like the DNA is costing him anything but a bit of time.
Backup is simultaneously straightforward and complicated. He and Eddie never really talked about the will beyond that first conversation. Buck understood his role. If the worst happened and he and Christopher lost Eddie, Buck is the backup. He’s the fallback to ensure Chris is protected and loved. To teach him the things Eddie would no longer be there to teach. For now, he’ll still love and protect Chris as if he’s his own, but he knows he’s nothing more than a friend. Definitely not a dad. Backup will cost him everything while also saving him.
The people in his life want to make sure Buck is okay. None of them, Buck included, expect the conversations to go this way.

Mike’s face burns red and he practically yelps, “No! I- who said anything about making out?! It’s just a…a normal kiss.” Jesus Christ, he should’ve known that this wouldn’t go well. But what did Will expect? It was the story they’d agreed to tell – the story exactly how it had actually happened. “It’s just part of the story.”
“Alright,” Will responds, leaning back in his desk chair as he twiddles a pencil between his fingers, “but are you like, into it?”
“I-” Mike starts. His boyfriend raises an expectant eyebrow. From the bed on the opposite side of the room, El herself gives him a look. They’re both waiting. Mike nearly blanches. “This is a trap.”
