Hisui was an extremely hostile region. No matter which corner you looked around, inescapable danger was never far away. Be it the bitter cold and harsh weather, or the wild Pokémon lurking behind every tiny ledge, life-threatening situations could be waiting for you anywhere. Akari knew this all too well. Too often, her encounters with wild Pokémon had ended by the skin of their teeth.
Rei and the professor hadn't been particularly thrilled about it. Of course not. Too many members of the research team had lost their lives out here for this wilderness to be taken lightly. Akari understood the professor's hesitation about letting people go alone, of course she did. She had seen it with her own eyes. She, too, had witnessed the raw power that nature could unleash against humankind. And yet... and yet... Akari could take care of herself. She wasn't a little child anymore.

Worn, mismatched eyes turn to the crystal sphere resting on the table, seated neatly on its wooden stand. It pulses softly, starlight swirling in its impossible depths. A gift from the Witches themselves. His window to the script of the universe—to futures untold.
Mercy, they called it.
He stares at it, unmoving, twirling the quill in his hand without a thought. Its whispers fill his ears, reminding him of his unquenched thirst, beckoning him for a sip. He knows it's poison. He knows what he'll see if he dares to glimpse again.
With a tremble of his hand, he sets the quill down. A feather-light caress along the orb's glassy surface is all it takes.
He is standing in a flour storm. He's on his knees before the ruins of his first kingdom. He's cradling a crumbling child in his arms, his face wet with tears. He is futile. He is enraged. He is desperate.
He is nothing.

Why did it rise? The question had no answer. Was it weakness that turned it from the reaper’s hand? An unwillingness to face a comforting unknown, to commit? Or was it a newfound strength? It couldn’t be sure, and it never would. As it limped across the stone, sniffling, trembling, it turned its back on the temptation to lay down and let the world wash away. Maybe there would be help. Maybe that was possible? It seemed like a joke, but that single, small idea brought this dead body back to life.
A spark of electricity cracked across its wool.
As a corpse awakened and dragged itself up from the bottom of the world, with such a long journey ahead, it remembered five things about itself.
Its name was Calamus. He, sort of, was a boy. He was a mareep. He was heir to the throne of Lightbeacon, the eternal kingdom of the northeast.
And Lightbeacon’s ruling family—no, HIS family—as of this night, had ceased to exist.
