Summary
The Exile schooled his expression in a way that seemed to fool everyone but Ilya. The Exile seemed scared of his own shadow, the very core of his being something he seemed to want to excise, cut out entirely and smother to death so no one ever had to see it. Ilya wanted to see it.
He often saw glimpses, when they were alone, of who Shane was behind the charade. Shane was such a bright light that it blinded Ilya at times, the need to avert his eyes overwhelming, to look away from what’s warm enough to make his heart bloom.
Ilya looks down at the Exile, down at Shane, and sees beautiful dark eyes staring back expectantly, and Ilya has never been one to deny him anything.

Summary
On his worst days, when he felt at his lowest, he was reminded of his mother. When the world comes crashing down around him, when he feels like he’s drowning in how impossible everything is, he knows he is his mothers son, and understands why she couldn’t take it any longer.
When he was younger he had wished he could carry all his mothers sadness for her, take all the hurt she had to bear and bear it himself. He thinks some days that he got his wish, and when she left him that day she left all her sadness with Ilya.
There was nothing he could say that wouldn’t be entirely too little, when the feeling itself was all encompassing. Ilya loved his mother, and she died, and now he has to hold that love in his heart forever, with nowhere else to put it. It hurt to hold on to, weighed him down and made his chest feel heavy. What else was he supposed to do? He could never put it down.

Summary
Ian thought, a little dazedly, that maybe he should be annoyed with his husband treating him like a dog. Instead, he leaned into Mickey’s hands in his hair, one gently petting and the other providing a grounding source of pain for Ian to focus on, letting himself be manhandled as his eyes slipped closed and he got comfortable. Ian can feel the rubber band snap as soon as Mickey says it.
“There's my good boy.”
It’s said so quietly that maybe he wasn’t even saying it to Ian, but just to himself in a moment of reverence. Doesn’t really matter, because Ian heard it either way, and he can practically feel as the switch flips inside his mind.
Oh. He’s a good boy.
So Ian melts, and Ian whimpers, and Ian maybe, embarrassingly, nuzzles into the hand petting his hair.
The rest of the morning is a bit of a blur, after that.

Summary
“Should call you the Ottawa Puppies,” says the Toronto centre, Svensson. As an insult it makes no sense, so Ilya ignores it, until he continues, “Hear Hollander keeps you on a short leash.”
Ilya is the captain, so if anything, he should be holding the leash. In English, you can be singular or plural, but he knows what Svensson is trying to say. He is saying Ilya Rozanov, you are Hollander’s bitch.
“Only sometimes,” Ilya replies, grinning. He wins the face off.
OR: Ilya trains himself to be a very, very good guard dog for Shane.

Shane was quiet for a moment, ticking through the words he had learned and picked up over the years. As Ilya suspected, this was not one of them.
Inevitably he asked, "what does it mean?"
It was Ilya's turn to be quiet.
Or a continuation of Ilya getting mental health treatment after the Long Game ends that nobody asked for and him coming to terms with being diagnosed with bipolar 2.
