A few years ago, Ian had shown up at Mickey’s door practically begging to see him. From just one glance, it was obvious the kid was panicking. Mickey had agreed to meet him at the store, immediately assuming the worst after witnessing Ian in such a frazzled state. So when the younger boy told him that Monica was back, Mickey was baffled. At the time, he’d given Ian shit for being so dramatic, for making him think it was something serious.
But now, Mickey was finally starting to understand why Monica’s random appearances fucked the kid up so bad.

Gallagher may have been the best fuck of Mickey’s life – though he’d never admit it – but no lay was worth getting killed over. And he knew he’d get killed, if Terry found out. So he should’ve called it quits. He should have called it quits a long time ago. In fact, ‘they’ never should have happened in the first place.
But try as he might, Mickey couldn’t give it up.

He stopped in front of her, like he didn't know what to say. Fiona just stared at him. Lip stirred beside her.
"You got a baby," he said.
"Two," she replied, chin jerking toward Lip.
He blinked. Then, slowly, he dropped his bag and unzipped it. He pulled out a sandwich, squished, half-eaten, wrapped in a crumpled napkin, and held it out to her.
"You can have the rest," he said. "It's peanut butter. No jelly."
Fiona hesitated. Her stomach twisted with hunger, but she'd been taught not to trust strangers, even if they were small and sad-looking like her. Still... a sandwich was a sandwich.
She reached out and took it.
"Thanks."
He sat down next to her on the curb without asking. Just dropped his backpack by his feet and let out a sigh like someone twice his age.
"I'm Evan," he said, picking at the edge of his sneaker sole.
"Fiona."
