“You are so beautiful,” Judith whispered as she nibbled on her earlobe. “So striking. Whatever you’re thinking, don’t. I look at you, and I see how much you’ve lived, and I like it. Don’t hide from me, sweetheart. Please? Let me see you.”
Avis surrendered. She let Judith kiss her everywhere she pleased. Over her neck and jaw and lips. She let her look. She let her touch. Those lithe fingers of hers that danced over Avis’s jutting angles and non-existent curves. She was so soft and gentle, as if she feared Avis might crumple at the slightest pressure.
Gentle made Avis want to scream. Half-mad with lust, she wanted Judith to take her hard and fast and if she wanted to be gentle later, so be it, but she just felt so hot and heady, and the scent of jasmine and lime hung in the air.
But if Judith wanted to take her time, Avis would let her. She’d let Judith do anything she wanted. She’d be anything she needed. She’d—
“You’re so much like her.”

"The hot chocolate and pastry are decadent enough on their own, but time is the real indulgence. Judith meant it when she told the waiter she wouldn’t be leaving for a good long while. Sure, she’s working even now, but the air around her feels lighter than it ever could deep in the halls of Knopf where everything is dark carpets and gleaming mahogany. The sun is brighter here than it seemed to be back in New York and Boston, too. Hell, even the food seems remarkable—if only for its arrival with no fuss, no quibbling over seasoning and American customers and French authenticity, no endless bickering from two women far too old and behind on their deadline for Judith to tolerate it with good humor."
