Summary
“Surely in this weather we aren’t the only ones with car trouble. And I’ll contact one of our colleagues to explain our situation and why we’ll be late. Who should I call?”
He finally turns to look at Jayce, and he’s more startled by the sight of him than their situation.
Jayce has gone pale, and looks entirely in shock. He stares deeply into the dashboard, eyes wide and fearful. His hands held tight in his lap.
“Jayce,” he snaps his fingers in the man’s face. Jayce jumps at it, appearing disoriented as he finally looks at Viktor. “Are you listening?”
“What?” He sounds uncharacteristically small.
“I said we’re stuck,” Viktor explains.
PLOT: Viktor is forced to give his avoided colleague Jayce Talis a ride to their seminar. During a snowstorm. And then they get stuck in it together. Little does Viktor know the impact that’ll have.

Summary
The ink hadn’t even dried up on Jayce’s PhD diploma when the job offer landed in his inbox. Prestigious, well-funded, and in a country he had never even considered moving to. At the time, it had seemed like the opportunity of a lifetime.
But being there now, staring at a stack of unread emails, most of them marked urgent in varying degrees of exaggeration, Jayce wonders if he’d been a little too eager to say yes.
He came here to innovate, teach, and change the game, but lately, it feels like he spends more time fighting bureaucracy than breaking ground.

“I do not– need your help,” he hissed, interrupted by a raw hiccupping sound.
“No? And here I thought you hated being wrong.” Jayce shook his head, glanced out into the empty lab, glowing in grey, unnatural tones like a crypt.
This was somewhere the dead got buried.
“Alright, V. Get up, then.”
The plates of armor fluttered, pulsing up and down like a dying bird's ribcage. Viktor was trying to breathe. He wasn't doing a very good job of it, and the angry sparks from his chest suggested he wouldn't be able to for much longer.
“Go on. If you don't need my help then get up and fix yourself--”
Viktor's boot hit the ground, the ring of metal tinging through the air. His shoulders rose in a moment of hesitation, and then he braced a hand on his knee – his bad knee – and pushed.
Or, when Viktor is gravely wounded, he shows up on Jayce's doorstep, not sure exactly what he's looking for.
