“I already told you, I don’t have hypothermia,” Lance says. “I’m okay. I’m just really, really cold.”
Keith raises an eyebrow. “What do you think hypothermia is?”
“Oh, don’t get all technical. I—”
His body betrays him by breaking out into another fit of shivers, so violent they leave him dizzy, his vision dark at the edges.
It knocks most of the fight out of him, and he sits there for a moment, feeling miserable and pathetic.
“Look,” Keith says, his voice low and infuriatingly kind, “you can drop the act. I know you. I can tell when you’re not okay.”
Lance stares at him, feeling exposed and cut to the bone.
“I could get better on my own,” he says.
“You won’t,” Keith tells him bluntly. “Not unless you let me help you.”

Getting stranded in a cave during a blizzard is bad. Having to rely on Keith Kogane for warmth is… complicated. Lance survives the night. Figuring out what it meant is another story.

“I see your description of the Red Paladin wasn’t an exaggeration.” Rachel slinks up beside Lance with that annoying grin of hers. “He’s very pretty.”
“Hands off, Rachel. He’s gay.”
“Which works out perfectly for you.”
Crossing his arms, Lance scoffs. “He wouldn’t ever be interested in me.”
“He’s here, isn’t he?” Rachel shrugs. She already starts to walk back into the chaos but not before throwing one last look over her shoulder to say, “Pretty obvious to all of us.”
(Or, Keith gets injured on a Blade mission and decides to recuperate at Lance’s parents’ house. Things only escalate from there.)

The door opens to reveal long, black, sweat-matted hair sticking to pale skin, an achingly familiar uniform, and a truly worrying amount of blood.
He notices all these things, the minute details, the discarded crimson soaked bandages on the floor, his suture kit that’s strewn across the room, heavy breathing and shaky hands, before his mind allows him to piece it all together.
His knife clatters to the ground.
After a year of radio silence, with no warning whatsoever, Keith Kogane is bleeding out on Lance’s bathroom floor.

Summary
“What the fuck did you just call me?” Keith asks angrily, rubbing at his own hand, his eyes wide with confusion.
“I didn’t say anything!” Lance defends, gaze flicking between Keith and the mage. He genuinely doesn’t know what the hell is going on.
The mage bows lightly, clasping their hands in front of their chest. “The ritual seems to have worked as expected. Worry not, Paladins, your new bond will vanish by itself once you’ve strengthened the preexisting bond between the two of you enough.”
Lance shivers. What? What fucking bond?
Keith seems equally as bewildered when he looks back at him.
or: Keith and Lance get magically bonded against their will. Whenever they touch, they can hear each other’s thoughts.
