Summary
Todd hasn’t seen Neil in nearly seven months.
After a semester at military school, Neil is coming back to Welton. He seems remarkably the same except for one big thing: Neil avoids Todd like the plague. And despite his best attempts, Todd can’t seem to crack the code on this new version of Neil. Todd can only keep his hurt feelings locked inside for so long.
Or in which Neil’s father is upset about more than the play. And Neil handles his feelings for Todd by avoiding him at all costs. It goes about as well as you’d expect.

Summary
“Hey,” Neil says, grin tugging at his lips—swollen, red, bitten. “Stop thinking so hard.”
“It’s what I’m good at,” Todd argues weakly.

Summary
"It’s new, yes, and terrifying, but I feel a changed man, steady and bright. Oh, how your magic thrills me.”
Todd folded the paper up once again and looked up, eyes searching. They found Neil’s, locking, asking some sort of question, and Neil almost forgot how to breathe. His heart was pounding rapidly, almost painfully so. Incredible. That was incredible.
Todd’s eyes finally left his as the other boys gathered around him, cheering. The light of the fire danced across his face.
“Todd Anderson, everybody!” Charlie cheered. “What a man! A czar of romance, if I do say so myself.”
“Yeah, Todd, tell the people who that lovely sonnet was about!” Meeks clapped him on the back.
“Not a sonnet, idiot,” Knox cut in. “All the same, who’s the lucky girl, Todd?”
Oh.
If Neil hadn’t been able to breathe before, he sure couldn’t now. He’d been so lost in the language. He hadn’t even considered the clear implications.
“A summer love?” Knox proposed eagerly.
“Something like that," Todd said quickly, and Neil's stomach dropped.

Summary
Someone had taken a huge spoon and scooped the organs right out of his body, leaving him hollow. And yet he felt sick, gut churning as the world spun around him.
His surroundings blurred until he was all that was left, him and the bottomless pit on his chest.
And then there was a hand, on his shoulder. The weight of it enough to pull him out of his own head, just for a moment.
“Todd? Hey.” Someone tried to get his attention, a familiar voice.
Neil.
or, they've been friends for a few months now, and Todd has been doing a good job at keeping his struggles hidden.
That is, until one day he doesn't show up at lunch, and for the first time ever he's got people who notice his absence.- Language:

Summary
Todd drops his head down, lets his chin sit near his chest, and then looks across to Neil’s bed. No one’s made it while Todd’s been sleeping, and he climbs out of his own, sits down on the mattress, and grips onto the blankets. He feels the rough material between his fingers, and brings it up to his face. Presses his nose into it, longing to feel the heat of Neil in it still. He could go into the wardrobe, he thinks, and run his fingers along the edge of Neil’s clothes. Remember happier days of a time he wore each one.
He sighs, drops the blanket from his face, and opens his eyes.
Neil is watching him.

Summary
Todd has just essentially volunteered to die. It doesn’t matter how much padding the Capitol applies to it, it’s true. He’s got nothing to rely on except an overly reserved mentor and his own instincts. Not much — but he’ll need to figure out how to use them, or he’s good as dead.
His odds are still better than Neil’s, who was reaped straight out of the bowl. With his lack of skills, Neil knows he’s practically dead already. He’s decided to dedicate his energy to something other than his own survival — sending his District’s volunteer back home.
Neither of them can ever be fully prepared for what’ll happen in that arena, but they can decide how to fight it — together or not.
