Summary
Neil survives his suicide attempt and continues his junior year at Welton with the rest of the Poets and Keating. He managed to miss the shot and instead really harshly smacked his head against the oak in the study. Things seemed shockingly okay, then he fell asleep into his lunch and it got worse from there. The poets are worried and Keating is able to help them out.

Charlie, sunglasses pushed up into his auburn hair, shot Todd a suspicious look. The music was booming through the speakers. The room was hot with sweat. Todd was struggling not to falter beneath Charlie's eyes, fighting to keep them off the boy next to him.
Don't say anything stupid, he thought.
"I carried a watermelon."
Laughter, hilarious and wonderful. Charlie looked like he was about to say something particularly rude, but he did not get a chance to, for Neil, eyes coffee-warm and alight with such joy Todd could not hold back looking at him any longer, took a step forward.
He grinned, held out his hand.
And asked: "Want to dance?"
Don't say anything stupid, Todd begged.
His mouth would not listen.
"Yes."Or: Todd never goes to Welton. It's the summer of 1963 when he spends his holidays at Kellerman's and meets the boy who'll change his life.

Summary
After his attempt, Neil Perry was sent to military school for two years by his Father. But under certain... circumstances... he has left and moved back to his hometown to persue the Arts. He never expected all his old friends to still be there.
Todd Anderson is trying to live his life in a quiet town, and now his parents have finally moved away he thinks he might be able to. Until a familiar face returns and new feelings are stirred up.

Todd has just essentially volunteered to die. It doesn’t matter how much padding the Capitol applies to it, it’s true. He’s got nothing to rely on except an overly reserved mentor and his own instincts. Not much — but he’ll need to figure out how to use them, or he’s good as dead.
His odds are still better than Neil’s, who was reaped straight out of the bowl. With his lack of skills, Neil knows he’s practically dead already. He’s decided to dedicate his energy to something other than his own survival — sending his District’s volunteer back home.
Neither of them can ever be fully prepared for what’ll happen in that arena, but they can decide how to fight it — together or not.

Neil Perry died when he took a gun to his own forehead beacause he wasn’t able to be free James Wilson became a doctor because his father told him too, and is working in a teaching hospital in New Jersey. James Wilson doesn’t suck the marrow out of life, he doesn’t even live it.
Accepting his cowardice, James turns to hurry away, unable to face Charlie, Knox, and the dreadful feeling in his chest. The last thing he sees before his body hits the floor is a fist flying towards his face.

In the aftermath of Neil’s death, Todd arrives at a conflict with himself. Try to forget the sun of his world, the boy who brightened his very life, become successful like his parents have always wanted him to, or live each day remembering him, go through life with the constant weight of what could have been.
In which Todd chooses to keep the memory of Neil with him, refusing to let go of the past, and maybe that isn’t so bad like so many people say. Keeping a part of the boy he loved with him throughout his life helped him get through tough times, happy and sad days alike. Through keeping Neil’s memory alive, Todd learns how to process his best friend’s death and turn his bleak future around.
