And the thought is so terrifying that, suddenly, Neil doesn’t want to die anymore.

An entirely canon-compliant character study of Todd throughout his first year at Welton, complete with all of the shame, guilt, shock, anger, sadness, and grief that comes with knowing and losing Neil.
This entire fic was inspired by “Merry Christmas, Please Don’t Call” by Bleachers, because I can’t hear it without thinking of Neil and Todd, so, naturally, this is a tragic read and even the biggest angst fans are going to hate me for this one.
This is just a self-indulgent sort of side project, so updates will likely be sporadic, as I’m prioritizing my schoolwork, my life, and my other in-progress fics. If y'all like it enough I might pick up the pace a little bit, though!

He needed to prove that he was better, that he could be normal again. To his parents, to his friends, but most importantly to himself. Neil Perry wasn't broken. He would go back to school tomorrow, continue to get perfect grades, continue to make his friends laugh, or- or he could get rid of the feeling forever. Cut it at the root, solve the impossible equation that was his existence.
After the play, Neil fought with his father. Later, he stumbled through the snow slick streets in the dark, vision blurring with tears, and tripped. He tripped and fell, tore his ear open on jagged rock and dead tree.
At least that's what he tells everyone. He'll tell the Poets the truth, eventually. It's just that the air is so sweet and light, filled with laughter and song for the holidays, and he can't find the heart to ruin it. -
