Summary
With no resourceful ten year olds to stand in their way, the only race that Magma and Aqua have to their end goals is with each other. When Team Magma makes it there first, it falls on Archie and Team Aqua to stop them from turning Hoenn into a desolate wasteland.
Unfortunately, they soon after discover that stopping the apocalypse is just the beginning.
More unfortunately, it turns out the only ones capable of stopping the resulting cascade are Archie and Maxie. And they don't historically have a good track record.
Oh, and nobody mentioned the orbs would have side effects.
(Or: What not to do when there aren't a pair of Arceus-chosen plucky tweens to clean up your mess.)

They're spending the holiday on borrowed time. Desmond had no idea that the mystery of the Azran would take so long to unearth, and he’d fully expected to have already betrayed them all by Christmas, to have beaten Targent at their own foolish game before the year was over.
And so instead of celebrating Christmas with a traditional family unit, Desmond is celebrating with his brother who has no idea he’s related to him, said brother’s university assistant, his butler, a twelve-year-old who, frankly, should be with his own parents instead of travelling the world, the emissary of an ancient civilisation, and a cat.
…Well. He supposes the holidays are different for everyone.
