    “You have a mate, Elain.” Azriel said. He knew that going into detail would only open another can of worms — one that they didn’t have time to deal with right now. “And he’s in this house. Do you know what I would do if I had a mate?” He took a step forward and cupped Elain’s face, his eyes burning in the darkness. “Do you know what I would do if I had you as my mate?”

    The words hung between them, suspended in the air, and Azriel knew that he was teasing himself. She would never be his mate and it would be easier for them all if he just accepted that.
