“I know there's not much I can do about your parents. They’re yours, and I can’t change that.” He clicked the pen closed, ripped the page from his notebook, and held it out to Max. “But if there’s ever anything you need, if you ever need help with anything, I’m only a phone call away.”
Against his will, Max’s hand shot forward. He took the paper from David and stuffed it into his pocket, feeling it crumble against his legs—He didn’t need it, he didn’t want it, he certainly didn’t deserve it, but he couldn’t stand hearing David sound so distressed. It was really fucking annoying.
He wouldn’t use it, of course. He couldn’t—He knew how to take care of himself. He didn’t need help from David, of all people.
He didn’t need to call David.
He wasn’t going to call David.
…
One hundred and fifty-two days after the last day of camp, David got the phone call.
Or, Max’s parents suck. After a whole summer learning to deal with someone who actually CARES, he’s gonna have a hard time adjusting back to the neglect
