Summary
A girl at the front desk glanced his way upon entry, and then perked up. “You’re new!” she said immediately, with a smile, her very-blue eyes shining. “Welcome to the Umida Village hotel, apartment complex, and visitor’s center. Not only are we the best, but we’re also the only! How can I help you?” She looked very young, probably seven at the oldest, and twirled a light brown ponytail around her finger as she spoke what sounded like a well-rehearsed line.
“I’m, uh, supposed to be moving in?” His landlady had said she’d meet him when he arrived, and unless he was sorely mistaken, the little girl was definitely not her. “My name is Makoto...Tachibana Makoto.”
(Or, after a long stint in Tokyo, Makoto moves away to take a job in a small village. This story is not about that job.)

Yuki looked at him. His face was flushed from the cold and his cigarette bobbed as his fingers twitched. He had an arm wrapped tightly around his chest and his shoulders were hunched. His earlier confidence seemed to seep out of him. Yuki thought about the towels stacked in his laundry basket. He thought about the borrowed clothes he was wearing. They smelled like Kakeru’s deodorant and laundry soap.
“I haven’t eaten,” Yuki muttered.
Kakeru put out his cigarette. He looked at Yuki, eyebrows furrowed, mouth open slightly as if he was about to say something, and then sighed. He brushed some of Yuki’s hair out of his eyes and tucked it behind his ear.
“We can get something on the way back,” he said.

“Yuki!” Momiji chirped, loud enough that Yuki brought the phone further from his ear. “You’re in Tokyo, right? Aya said you were. Haru and I are going to Shinjuku tonight, you should come!”
“Shinjuku?” Yuki raised his eyebrows. “Is Rin coming?”
There was a pause. “No, she’s not.”
“Huh. Okay,” Yuki said. “But anyway, I can’t come, I have plans with Kakeru tonight.”
“Kakeru?”
“Uh, Kakeru Manabe, he was the student council vice president in high school.”
“Oooh! That guy!” Momiji’s voice became slightly distant, he was no longer speaking into the phone. “Haru, Yuki is going to bring his hot-loud-high-school-friend.”
