Buck looks towards barred windows but the room changes, blurs and all at once he’s in the bunker. Or is it a garage? There’s no time to deliberate before a shot rings out, cut-throat through dim, dingy air. Eddie. Buck tugs, trying to rip free of tape, but it’s wrong, this time, it’s metal. He’s handcuffed to the pole.
‘Eddie!’ he yells, voice rough and hoarse. ‘Eddie!’
He jerks and he’s sitting up in a bed, sweating, dizzy.

The voice over the line was inhuman. Mechanic. Altered. Stripped bare of any of its humanity and left with nothing but a voice module that crawled out through the receiver and rubbed at Bobby’s skin like ice.
“We have something that belongs to you, Captain Nash.”
Bobby’s heart thumped against his chest when he held his breath too long.
“Who is this?”
“We’ll be in touch soon. Keep your phone on you. The next time we call, you will answer or your kid will pay the price.”
Bad guys target Buck after mistaking him to be Bobby’s son.

"Eddie?" Shannon picks up on the fourth ring. "Everything okay?"
"I kissed a man," he says.
The silence on the other end stretches for nine thousand years. Eddie can hear Shannon breathing. He can hear his own heartbeat slamming against his ribs. He stares at the apartment building through his windshield, at the lit window on the fourth floor that might belong to E. Buckley, and waits for his ex-wife to say literally anything at all.
"You what?"
"I kissed a man, Shannon. Just now. I was delivering food and he opened the door and I just— I kissed him. On the mouth. And I don't know why."
Another silence. Then a sound Eddie recognizes with dawning horror as Shannon trying very, very hard to suppress a laugh.
"Shannon."
"I'm processing."
"You're laughing."
"I'm processing." She fails spectacularly. "I'm sorry, I just— you kissed a man? Edmundo Diaz? The same Edmundo Diaz who wouldn't watch Brokeback Mountain with me because it made him 'uncomfortable'?"
"It did make me uncomfortable!"
"Yeah, Eddie, I'm starting to understand why."
