Lucy can’t stop staring at her finger, at the place a wedding ring sat, however briefly. It’s dumb, she thinks, chastising herself— it’s not like they’d been wearing them for years, or even months— it’s just that now that she’s gotten a taste, she kind of doesn’t want it to stop. She pictures it, Kate and her both in white, something small. Maybe they’d get married in the local courthouse and hold a celebration later, just her and her girl and their shared smiles.
