“Tonight’s the night, doctor,” Aventurine purrs, tugging him by the sash as they enter through another door, leading to another bar.
It’s a less grandiose one, hidden in an alleyway, but the gambler has persuaded him into thinking that the harder the find, the rarer the delicacies… or maybe Ratio’s will simply wavered when he felt a playful tug to his sash. “I’ll show you how drunk I can really get.”
Ratio huffs, upturn of his lips betraying him. He lets himself be led inside the crowd, seated at a stool that nearly topples from the force of impact. “Give me a good show then.”
The wine urges me on, the bewitching wine, which sets even a wise man to singing and to laughing gently and rouses him up to dance and brings forth words which were better unspoken.

Summary
Ratio shifts forward. “If there is something I can do to assist you, Aventurine, then I will try my best to—”
“I need you to marry me.”
To escape a bureaucratic shitstorm brought on by his less-than-complete onboarding paperwork, Aventurine comes to Ratio with a proposal: stay married for a period of two years, then get an easy, quickie divorce once Aventurine's residency status is secure.
Only, it's not enough for them to simply get married; the marriage has to look legitimate too. Which is fine. Aventurine can act the part. Except, he's not really acting. Not anymore. And this last-minute trip to visit Ratio's family in Bumfuck Nowhere, Veritas Prime as Ratio's newly minted fiancé is threatening to prove it.

Summary
In a weird way, he feels as though he’s conned Aventurine, because if Aventurine knew the truth - that Veritas is horribly and unceasingly attracted to him - he would never have approached him with this proposition.
But he doesn’t know, and now Veritas has to pretend that he’s ever had a romantic relationship before. He would say that it can’t be that hard - billions of people have had successful romantic relationships without prior research or experience - but Veritas is keenly aware that he is not like even billions of other people.
Aventurine approaches Veritas with a teensy, tiny proposition - that they pretend to be a couple for the sake of Aventurine's reputation on his newest Harmony-worshipping planetary aquisiton.

“Ahhaha! Warn a guy first, would ya?”
Veritas frowned in confusion, only to make the connection a millisecond later.
Oh? Was he ticklish, or…?
He squeezed Aventurine’s waist again, more intentional. Slower. This time, despite how Aventurine ducked his head, Veritas saw and felt the sudden hitch in the smaller man’s breath against his sternum. The way the swaying bough of Aventurine’s spine went stiff. The way a flush rose to the shell of his ear exposed by the sweet little tinted braid woven along his temple. The awkward, trembling laugh that followed, just barely audible over the pulsating music.
An answering rush of heat came over Veritas, renewed arousal surging through him. That small, taut waist under his hands… Aventurine liked being touched there. By him.
