Summary
A loud caw broke through the quiet hallways, the shuffling of students to their next class freezing entirely as heads snapped up. Wilbur turned and grinned, the two earrings along his left ear swinging wildly with the spin. No matter how many times he got to see this, he never quite got used to it.
Familiars were usually plain animals- not sentient, without human forms, and with no magical properties of their own. Unlike Phil, who was lucky on only the first two counts, Wilbur had been blessed by all three. And when Tommy fucked his landing, and in a panicked squack and a burst of fire that couldn’t burn Wilbur even if the little phoenix tried, Wilbur was there to catch him.

It's hard for Phil, a cat, to look after a young toddler. It's even harder as the pair lives on the streets, getting colder by the day as winter steadily approaches.
Then the pair get picked up by a tall witch, and his tusked familiar. In the midst of a magical home, Phil learns about himself, cares for Tommy, and struggles with a sense of guilt and self-worth.

Techno somehow has Phil changing his mind and in return, the other finds a home.
