Summary
There is an art that layers thin paper on top of one another, blending colors and cutting corners to create a totally new image from dozens of individual sheets. Kabuto views spying like that. Each identity he assumed was an individual person, cut to fit whatever role he needed then glued over his own to obscure the original. Never completely though. A good lie always needed a bit of the truth to be believable, so pieces of Kabuto Hyuuga always showed through. It's apparently such a convincing image that scraping it all off after his spying career is through proves difficult, and he keeps finding paper covering his face in the mirror.

Summary
Orochimaru's death was supposed to make things easier for him. Sasuke would be in the wind chasing his brother, Konoha's greatest enemy would have fallen without its founder and despot, and Kabuto's long spying career would finally be over. All that was left was fake his way through remorse before disappearing in the middle of the night with his lab burnt out behind him. Simple.
Simple is immediately squashed when Orochimaru's daughter comes home for the funeral unexpectedly and asserts her birthright as his successor. Now Kabuto has a single night to figure out how to keep his last hope from falling apart.

Summary
Kabuto Yakushi sits bound before Ibiki Morino, Konoha's lead interrogator. The only reason he's bound by ropes and tags and not encased in stone is because nominally, that's the reward for cooperating. It's not the best welcome home party but it's about what he expected. The only cure for years and years of spying is painful, but the secrets he's kept have been as sharp as broken bones. Sometimes you have to break them again to reset them properly.
Kabuto Hyuuga is ready to come home, no matter how much it doesn't want him.

Summary
There was only a brief period, for both of them, when what they looked like reflected who they were born as. Sakura no Oto and Kabuto Hyuuga both have been leading lives filled with lies from a very young age, from when the double agent met Orochimaru's daughter. Both lived as spies in each other's country, hiding their identity, finding family in each other when their own wasn't around.
The weight of their secrets will inevitably drag them down.Theory shared with Kitexa. Canon diverges at Orochimaru's death, because Kishimoto lost his ability to explain his own story right about then.
