Summary
The day started pretty normal for Shane. He woke at dawn, leaned over his boyfriend, placed a kiss on whichever skin he could reach (this morning, it was a shoulder, the rest was buried in sheets and pillows), then he got up, took a bottle of water and went for a run.
Normality found it's end as he re-entered the Cottage. He took off his shoes, threw a glance at the bedroom door to his right, and found it open, the bed empty. Ilya must have gotten up.
"I'm back!" Shane yelled. A habit he started to form. Not only announcing his return, but sometimes just making noise so Ilya knew he was there. Apparently, Shane could be uncharacteristically sneaky without noticing. And Ilya was surprisingly easy to startle. After Shane accidentally almost lodged Ilya's phone in the ceiling after just stepping in to hug him from behind one morning, sitting at the kitchen counter, Shane made an effort to be louder.
He could hear water running from the en-suite's sink. So far so normal.
Then, Ilya's panicked voice.
"SHANE."

Summary
After months of being ghosted by Ilya, Shane gets horrible news about his health. At the age of 23 he gets diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He is supported by his friends and family and yet he cannot stop thinking of his rival. But he and Ilya have never been more disconnected, so he resigns himself to fighting this without Ilya in his life.
Ilya knows he was an asshole last Spring. Shane has been ignoring him all summer. But he figures that once he's back in North America and the season starts, he'll be able to get back in Shane's good graces. And then Montreal announces that they have placed Shane Hollander on Long Term Injured Reserve and he panics.

Or, the Centaurs figure out how down bad Ilya is for Shane, not realizing the feeling is mutual, and decide to try and bring them together with ridiculous plans.
