He focused on his studies and little else, intent on becoming a police psychiatrist to avoid tragedies like what happened to his father happening again. So when his mother started dating, he hadn't expected a woman not much older than him with a ten year old son and he certainly hadn't expected them to pull him and his mother out of the depression they'd been stuck in for years. When they got engaged? He had expected that, he'd already been calling Hal his brother for a year by that point.
