“He is not coming, and there will be no reprieve.”
The execution block in front of Mary grows blurry as the priest says those words. She blinks away the blurriness—hands tightening around the prayer beads held in them. Her son. Her son is not coming.
And these will be her final breaths.

Mary, Queen of Scots, faces her execution after 20 years of captivity. The axe falls—as does her head. Yet when she next opens her eyes, it is not the sight of the afterlife that welcomes her. She finds herself back at the convent on the day of her return to the Chateau of Fontainebleau.
But she is not alone on this journey. Another soul accompanies her.

Summary
Just a few years before the world ended, a kid barely eight years of age showed up at the gates of Ericson’s Boarding School for the Troubled Youth. Just like any other kid – with tons of emotional baggage, unceremoniously dumped by their parents, and ignored in the eyes of the school staff. At the very least, the kid wasn’t on the outside for too long.
“My dad used to hit me a lot,” a blonde boy spoke up at lunchtime.
“Oh, mine hates me,” a boy with freckles and his hair in twists joined in. “... He won’t even look me in the eyes anymore.”
The new kid blinked at the boys, before quietly adding, “My dad’s dead.”

-In Hope's Peak Boarding School for the Troubled Youth, the students know not to expect much. The kids sent to the school are unwanted - they know that, their guardians know that, the staff knows that. Even with the promise of helping them, no help is offered.
So, instead, the students have to look out for each other.
Or, alternatively; Kokichi convinces Gonta to create a group chat with their classmates. Disaster ensues.
