On Tuesday morning it was a pink peony, in the keyhole.
The boy with eyes like the stars was wearing a dress that day, a flowy thing in greens and yellows that grazed the skin of his calves every time he walked. He’d paired that with a battered up pair of All Stars, but Wylan wasn’t one to comment on fashion choices, what with his shapeless sweaters and big scarves.
He smiled at him through his window, and the boy smiled back when he caught him staring.
Alternatively: Wylan Van Eck is an idiot but he still deserves nice things.

Summary
“Do you believe in…” A whisper, barely audible in the silence of the night. It always surprises Jesper how quiet it can get in the nice part of town: in the barrel, loudness and iniquity are one and the same. But here, in the Geldstraat, there are no gunshots to disturb the peace at sundown, no drunken howling at the moon.
“Do you believe in what?” He has his attention then, Jesper knows it. The crackling of the fire cradles him, warming his stiff muscles into pleasant pliancy.
“In a God, or Goddess, or Saint. Or any sort of higher power.”
He seems to pause and think at that, blue eyes straying towards the window and the dark sky beyond the glass. He brings two nimble fingers to play with a curl, painted red by the firelight, in a self-soothing gesture. “I used to pray, when I was a kid, that I’d learn how to read. If there is a God out there, her cruelty is matched only by her negligence.”
Alternatively: Wylan doesn't believe in a God. Jesper fucks him so hard he changes his mind. -

Summary
Being a mercher’s boyfriend has its upsides.
Living in the lap of luxury is somewhat of a new concept for Jesper, but definitely not an unwelcome change from the blistering lunacy of the Barrel. For the past two years, he has woken up on lavish pillows of feathers and silk, bathed with perfumed oils imported from the east, and eaten cakes rich with chocolate and berries prepared especially for him by the cooks. He might never entirely feel used to such things, but they no longer make him feel out of place, only grateful.
There are some aspects of his new life which are still a bit foreign though, and that Jesper thinks he’ll probably never fully get used to. Like the way most members of the staff still bow their head and clasp their hands when they greet him, in an explicit show of subservience. Witnessing those displays always leaves a bitter taste in his mouth, and a feeling of inadequacy starts to mount in his belly.
After all, he would have been just a barrel rat to these people, not that long ago. It makes him feel like an impostor.

In retrospect, Wylan should’ve seen it coming.
Their plan A did not work, and that was not necessarily a surprise – in all their years as professional troublemakers, he could count on the fingers of one hand the instances in which it all went according to plan. They were all well acquainted with the unexpected, so much so that it hardly fazed them at all. But that’s because Kaz was usually swift enough on his feet to come up with plans B through F, and save them in extremis. Usually, being the key word: that day, they were not afforded this luxury. His bomb should’ve gone off more than two minutes ago. And sure, two minutes is not a long time, but it was long enough to kill Jesper.
Not kill.
He’s not dead yet, he kept thinking to himself, like a litany. He’s not dead yet.
