Summary
Gertrude was back, had been back for a couple days now - supposedly reading statements in her Archives and plotting to destroy rituals now that she had the information she needed.
Gerry, however, wasn't back.
He waited. He waited at the airport until his eyes burned from scanning the endless crowds of people and the benches went empty, until the only passersby were the night staff giving him pitying looks and the bleary-eyed late arrivals. He waited at home, hoping to see suitcase sitting forgotten in the living room, ready to be emptied of its contents. He waited at the Institute, expecting to see him lurking around the corner of the building burning Leitners or annoying Gertrude.
But there was simply nothing.
Gerry was gone.

Summary
The two relaxed, watching as the fire crackled, the Leitners gradually catching alight. Smoke coiled between the books, leisurely escaping and rising into the night. The flames licking at the paper stretched and magnified, encroaching on all the kindling within reach. The fire grew and grew until, at last, it could grow no more and all that remained of the heap was smoldering ash and half a dozen ruined bookplates.
They were gone.
Gerry took Jon’s hand in his and led him away from their alleyway.
