As a consensus, we all seem to agree about the deaths of Mary, and subsequently - Jess’s - are “fridgings”. TV Tropes lists them as prime examples, too.
But, in a traditional/classic SPN-ish way, I would like to argue that “Fridging” on SPN has been subverted from the get go - we just didn’t know it back then.

OK fandom. Here is a question: How much fanfiction from Dean’s POV you have read? Written? How much from Sam’s POV?
I would guess the amount of Sam’s POV’s are towering over Dean’s.
Now, after this little assessment, how much of Sam’s POV’s are consistent, taking into account different writers and different story settings? Now, how about the consistency of Dean’s POV’s?Now, this might be just me, but going by my own experience, I would argue that Dean is HARD TO GET. So hard to get, that EVERY WRITER writes him differently.
Sure, there are the obvious similarities - the loyalty, his abiding love to his little brother, some of his more apparent characteristics.
But by a long shot? He is a fucking chameleon. In every story, sometimes - even by same authors - he is DIFFERENT.Series

Summary
One of the interesting arguments about the origins of wincest within a story is nature vs. nurture: Were they destined to it, or were they brought up like that? Soulmates or screwed-up psyche? I have no definite answer. Canon supplied us with both possibilities to the brothers’ emotional attachment: Soulmates, fate, Lucifer and Michael. Cupid brought John and Mary together so Sam and Dean will be born. On the other hand, we have John being the drill sergeant, the djinn showing how NOT close Sam and Dean are if Mary is alive, etc. We actually are left without a definitive answer. Maybe it’s both.
But here I would like to discuss the NURTURE aspect, and be a psychologist for a dime, and let myself meta it out. Troubling issues ahead, so please keep in mind.Series
