After a moment, he spoke again, quieter this time. “Do you… actually hate me?”
The question hit her like a sucker punch. She blinked, caught off guard, and turned to look at him. His face was tilted slightly away, but she could see the tension in his jaw, the way his fingers fidgeted with the hem of his sleeve.
“What?” she asked, more sharply than she intended.
“I mean, you used to make fun of me a lot,” he said, still not looking at her. “Like, a lot a lot. And I know I was kind of a dumbass back then — okay, I’m still kind of a dumbass — but sometimes I wonder if you ever actually liked me. Or if I was just… the class clown. Easy to laugh at.”
Kyouka stared at him, her throat tightening. She wanted to say something — anything — but the words tangled up in her chest like wires in a broken amp. She hadn’t expected this. Not from him. Not now.
“I didn’t hate you,” she said finally, her voice low. “I just… I didn’t know how to deal with you.”

“Happy birthday,” he said, his voice steady even though his pulse was not. He held out the package, awkwardly, as if it might burn him if he lingered too long.
Her lips curved into a small, startled smile as she accepted it. “Shouto… you didn’t have to.”
“I wanted to,” he replied, and it was the truth. He wanted to do this for her, not because it was expected, but because she mattered to him in a way that made the effort feel natural.
She stepped aside, inviting him in, and he followed her into the room. To his quiet amusement, she had constructed a blanket fort in the corner, pillows piled high beneath the draped fabric. It was whimsical, almost childlike, and yet it suited her perfectly. She was always so composed, so precise, but here was proof that she allowed herself softness too. He felt something warm stir in his chest at the sight.

His expression was unreadable in the dim light, but his gaze was steady, focused entirely on her as though she were the only thing in the world worth looking at. The sight made her throat tighten unexpectedly, and she had to swallow before she could speak.
“You’re really bad at this,” she teasingly murmured, her voice hoarse and barely above a whisper.
His lips quirked faintly, the smallest hint of a smile tugging at the corners.
“But I’m good at loving you,” he replied, the words so simple and certain that they left her momentarily speechless.
