In a world where humans are born with a predetermined ‘soulmate’, so to say, Ryland Grace is very happy to wonder the earth without. Sure, the weight of what should be his bond dulls the senses and makes the world a little more distant than he would like, but there was nothing for it. Nothing to fix the ache, except a certain splotch of stars, and this feeling of impending doom.
Well, there was nothing, until his life was ruined and subsequently fixed all in one horrible day.

My hand sank into something soft and wet. I sucked in a breath. Was I touching the equivalent of a vagina? I blushed even harder. I stroked that place which made Rocky vibrate and warble in arousal.
“Yes, yes, yes.” he said, “There, touch Rocky more there.”
I complied. I felt drops of mercury drip onto my hand, but when I examined my fingers there didn’t seem to be anything on them. Thank god, I didn’t need mercury poisoning after our first day of touching. Just another reminder he was wearing a super thin suit and I was in no danger.
The scientist in me wanted to ask him how he made the suit, but that could wait for another day. Right now I wanted to do all I could to increase his sexual pleasure.

At the end of his journey Grace realizes he has loved Rocky all along and cannot give him up. He decides to stay with Rocky for ever as his mate. The first time he sees Rocky’s mercury he is overcome with a desire to taste him, so he devises a way to touch that intimate liquid that only Adrian had ever touched, but the vaccine comes with a special unexpected side effect. Grace frowned. Maybe he could—An almighty crash reverberated through the dome, and Grace startled. He surged to his feet, turning automatically toward the sound, looking up.
A crackling creak groaned from the roof of the biodome, and abruptly, one of the xenonite panels popped out of its frame and fell, shattering. A massive floodlight fell through the opening and crashed through the roof of Grace’s house on top of the hill.
A superheated plume of ammonia exploded from the hole with a loud hiss, expanding rapidly.
“Grace!” came a frantic shout from down the beach. Grace swiveled to face Rocky, some hundred yards away, poised tall on his claws with alarm. “The safebox! Now! GRACE RUN!”

Homology Directed Repair: a natural cellular pathway used in gene editing to incorporate new genes into the DNA.
Six years into his stay on Erid, and Grace has a problem. It was becoming clear that it was nearly impossible to create an environment here that was totally free of heavy metals. They permeated the air, they clung to dust and rocks and the outsides of the exosuits, and they literally flowed through the bodies of the residents. Including him.
With his health declining, and no viable alternatives, Grace and the science thrums decide to take a chance on a risky procedure; altering Grace's DNA to give him an Eridian's resistance to heavy metal poisoning.
