Summary
The ReGene that would come to be known as Felicity Bui had a troubled life, if you supposed that it was alive. The Farm had turned its apparatus to shaping it into a useful tool, but, unfortunately, even ReGenes can act emotionally if their training is inadequate.
Still, a few moments of incompetence led to years without a proper tool, and that was just unacceptable handling.

Summary
Los Diablos has never been a kind city, and yet people still trail to the Free Economic Zone from every corner of North and South America through the railways, by foot, or car, drawn by the idea of freedom. Freedom to suffer in the searing shadow of the corporations, maybe, but that was better than the alternative. And, for some, maybe the freedom to rise higher.
That idea, rising like a Phoenix from the ashes of the Los Diablos slums, was in the heart and on the lips of every newcomer for the first two weeks there.
Then, mostly, they too fell to the lull of the city. They found a job doing something they hate, selling their body or their soul to someone who paid them pennies for it.
The land of opportunity for the lucky ones. Those who had a rich daddy to buy them a cushy job, or Big Boost Break! that gave them flight, laser vision, super strength and speed and a loving farm family back home.
At fourteen, Johnny not-yet-Rivera stole away on a train to the FEZ.
