Summary
Years later, Eddie would wonder exactly what the first sign was. If it was the cough or the fatigue. If it was the way that Buck always seemed to be just a little short of breath, or got dizzier than usual when standing up. He wondered if he had recognized the signs then, could he have changed things? Stopped the ticking of the clock, the slipping of the grains of sand into the bottom of the hourglass?
Years later, he would realize that once the symptoms started to show, it was likely already too late.
But that wasn’t what he had been paying attention to. No, Eddie had been focused on what had been simultaneously the easiest and (second) hardest thing he’d ever done: realizing he was in love with Evan Buckley.
Or, how Eddie realizes that Buck is hiding a secret from the 118—one that could fundamentally change everything forever. This is a story about hope and grief, about coming to terms with oneself and learning to accept love. This is a story about love, loss, and all the messy things in between.

Summary
“I know this is difficult,” Angela continued. “But there is something else you need to know. The reason I’m calling.”
Right, why was he getting a call from Child Protective Services after all? Unless...
“Ali had a daughter,” Angela says. “Her name is Charlotte. She’s four.”
Four.
The number lands like a verdict. Four years. The same amount of time that had passed since he last spoke to Ali. Buck can feel his chest tighten, and he weakly removes his grip from the couch and up to his hand holding the phone. One. Two. Three.
“She’s mine,” he whispered faintly.
“Yes,” Angela confirmed. “Ali listed you as Charlotte’s biological father.”
“I didn’t know,” Buck whispered. “I didn’t know.”

Summary
Eddie meets Evan in the summer of 2010 by a lake in El Paso. Both of them still teenagers, lost in life, and a little lonely. It only takes a smile and a sympathetic ear for the two to become inseparable and promise each other forever.
Eddie meets Buck in the fall of 2018 at a fire station in Los Angeles. It takes more than a smile and an explanation to forgive broken promises, fix broken hearts, rebuild trust and find a way to be a family again.
------------
Bobby is now in front of him introducing him to some of the other firefighters, but Eddie can hardly hear whatever it is they’re saying because he can’t take his eyes off the man standing like a statue a few feet away, with wide deer-caught-in-the-headlights-eyes, open mouth, and white as a sheet of paper. The man who abandoned him and his son three years ago. The man who is still the love of his goddamn life. Captain Nash is waving him over, and Evan finally starts moving, slow and clumsy, like a zombie.
“Eddie, this is Buck. Buck meet Eddie Diaz,” Bobby says.
“Buck?” Eddie asks dumbfounded, still not believing what is happening.

Summary
When the Buckleys decide their daughter belongs in an institution, Evan Buckley makes a choice. He chooses his sister.
Andrea Buckley has cerebral palsy. She uses a wheelchair, sometimes a walker. She laughs loud, talks fast, and refuses to be reduced to a diagnosis. She is Evan’s whole heart.
The night their parents try to send her away, Evan packs her bags, takes the keys, and drives toward Los Angeles with no plan and no backup. He becomes her brother, her guardian, her steady ground. Years later at the 118, his instincts with adaptive care and kids finally make sense to everyone else.
Slow burn. Found family. And maybe something more with Eddie Diaz.
