"Bobby," she says, watching him carefully. "You're making a big deal out of this. What's wrong?"
His shoulders tense before easing into an odd half-relaxed state. Bobby turns to her, head tilting just so, a funny little furrow in the middle of his brow. A frown looks uncomfortable on him, cheeks sagging. "You just should have given us some time to prepare is all."
"Okay," Rumi says, though it sounds like a question. "I'll… keep that in mind for next time?"
"Maybe you should stay in town tonight," he adds. "It's dark out. Going to be hard to find your way through the forest—I'm sure Celine hasn't left the lights on along the path."
"I'll be fine," she insists with a dismissive wave. She leans her weight onto one leg and shakes the numbness out of the other. "Like riding a bike."
Or: Rumi has spent four years away from her hometown. Now that she's graduated, she's ready to visit her family again. But time has left her behind and things have changed—and someone else has taken her place.

“Oh! Hello, where’d you come from, little guy?”
Mira turned back to Zoey, seeing her reaching down for something just under the table. She straighten back up, a toddler in her arms.
“What the—” Mira blinked, words vanishing as Zoey set the little boy on her lap and cooed at him. Rumi had already turned away, signaling to Bobby who was approaching them, and that was deeply unfair. Why was Mira the only one having her brain scrambled by the cuteness in front of her? Why wasn’t Rumi subjected to her own heart beating wildly in her chest?
“Aren’t you so cute?” Zoey cooed. “Look, Mira, he’s wearing our merch! Our littlest fan!”
The toddler blinked at Mira with wide eyes and stuck a thumb in his mouth. He wore the same HUNTR/X shirt Bobby loved best.
“Zoey, why do you have a baby?”
Mira never wanted children. Her parents turned her off the idea, but Rumi and Zoey begin to change her mind--not on purpose but just by being themselves. Thankfully, all three of them are alphas so Mira has plenty of time to unpack her own feelings from her parents' expectations. Unfortunately, Mira didn't consider that secondary genders are not as static as most people believe.

In hindsight, it should have been obvious. The way Rumi refused to go to the bathhouse, her bizarre relationship with Celine, this whole thing with the Saja Boys? Mira prided herself on reading people, and she felt stupid for not seeing it sooner. The pieces were all there, just waiting to be put together.
Rumi was gay.
The night after the joint signing with the Saja Boys, Mira went to confront Rumi about her ongoing weird behavior. Instead of letting hurt feelings drive the conversation, Mira took a minute to try and figure out what might be wrong. Unfortunately, she came to the completely wrong conclusion.
Misunderstandings ensue. They talk it out.

"Can you tell me, in your own words, what brought you to my line tonight?”
The silence stretched, filled with the hum of a terrified mind racing. Mira was about to prompt her again, gently, when the words burst out in a rushed, jumbled whisper.
“My friend Zoey—she said you were really good and that you wouldn’t laugh and that I should just—but I don’t know how to do any of this. I’ve never even—I mean, I’ve never—touched myself. Like that. At all.”
The raw honesty of the confession punched through Mira's professional layers and landed somewhere soft. Mira’s composure didn’t crack. But behind it, her mind went utterly, blankly silent for a full two seconds.
You have got to be kidding me.
OR, Mira provides live voice services to make her clients' darkest fantasies come to life. When her most chaotic regular, Zoey, crosses a boundary by referring Rumi, her wildly inexperienced friend, Mira goes on a journey that slowly blurs the line between her professional and personal lives, one phone call at a time.

Summary
After the events of the Idol Awards, Rumi is learning to take down her mental walls around her bandmates. This may mean admitting that she's developing untoward feelings for Mira and Zoey, but if they can accept that she's half demon, they can accept that she has unrequited feelings for them.
When those feelings turn out to not be unrequited, though, it opens up new dimensions in their relationship for all three of them, even as Rumi is still learning to accept herself.
