Lightheaded as he was, he realized he wasn’t in control of his own two feet as he leapt across another canal—safely this time. But as he ran, roof to roof by muscle memory alone, it dawned on him too slowly.

His mind went grey and quiet as he pushed back the pain, only realizing he had arrived as he pushed through the shutters of the workshop’s upper floor, tumbling to the ground.
