He is the oldest, after all. It makes sense.
Then Leo was chosen. The most impulsive of his brothers.
Donnie had to be chosen next, right?
Mikey was chosen.
After the lack of mechs for 5 years, Splinter cut his losses and focused solely on his sons with mechs. Donnie refused to believe that this is where his story ends.
He would make sure of it.

Things have been quiet in New York ever since the death of Oruku Saki, The Shredder.
Things have been quieter in the lair since the death of Splinter, their father.
Leonardo has pulled into himself, Raphael's temper is shorter than ever, Donatello is holed up in his lab and hardly comes out, and Michelangelo is trying to keep everyone together.
Which, is hard when your friends are being space-kidnapped.
TL:DR, Splinter died, the bros cried, people are being abducted by aliens. No one is having a good time :)
