Lucy takes a step back, then pauses. “Do you ever leave before dark?”
His eyes lift to hers, sharp and unreadable. “Usually not.”
“Why not?”
He shrugs. “Fewer interruptions.”
“Right.” She gives a small laugh. “You know, I’m starting to think my joke during the interview wasn’t such a joke. Maybe you are a vampire.”
Tim doesn’t laugh.
For a second, she thinks he didn’t hear. But he had; his eyes flicker, quick, like a warning light.
“I mean,” she adds hastily, “you never eat, you never go outside, you don’t like sunlight—it’s kinda a pattern.”
He holds her gaze for a moment longer, then says simply, “Good night, Lucy.”
She feels heat climb up her neck. “Good night.”

Bring it back to the start of the circle, her mind shoots back. Let it end as it began. Isn't this where your blood belongs?
The two argue for a two-second eternity; logos versus pathos.
But her heart wins. It will always win, even if it rips itself out in the process.
A warning is whispered over the rim of her fluted glass. A knowing look is passed between familiar strangers. Death-tinted champagne touches his lips but doesn't taint his tongue.
Esther falls that night; killed as she was a millennia ago, heart torn out by the very beast that she birthed
