The man flicked his gaze up from Ryo’s hands, the molten gold of his eyes piercing in a way that had Ryo’s breath hitching slightly, feeling like a deer under headlights. It only got worse when the man smiled at him, waved, and then continued to watch him instead of moving on like a normal person who’d been caught staring. It made Ryo feel oddly self-conscious in a way he hadn’t felt for years.
What was wrong with this guy? Was watching a guy slapping dough around really that interesting, or was he going through a midlife crisis where an abrupt change in career became strangely appealing? Either way, Ryo felt unsettled as he worked, as he felt those bewitching eyes trail over his arms and hands, so carefully watching his every move. He felt seen in a way he hadn’t felt in years, and the feeling frightened him more than anything else.

“Yoru, I just want to confirm, you were not on base last night, were you?” Sage queried before Yoru could even finish his sentence, voice pitched slightly higher in what sounded like thinly concealed panic. His frown deepened.
“No, I was away on a trip, remember? But what happened last night?”
He could hear Sage’s shaky inhale even through the phone before she responded. “This is the situation. As you may recall, last night, all the agents were gathered for a team bonding night.” Yoru nodded slowly, vaguely recalling that he’d planned his trip with the express purpose of avoiding the tedious party night. “I have reason to believe that the drinks may have been spiked with something.”

He was one of the senior engineers in the company, an unparalleled expert in nanotechnology.
He had been in a terrible car accident four months ago.

“Thank you. Thank you so much.”
He looked up to see what appeared to be a woman, her colours all muted. Her transparency in a space of low visibility made it impossible to make out her features, but he thought she would have once been considered pretty. The woman was walking towards him slowly, and Yoru could only watch, his body frozen as though encased in cement. If the pressure from outside had been oppressive, inside the dimensional crack, everything was magnified tenfold, and even the act of lifting his head had taken a colossal effort.
Immune to the tug of the world’s laws demanding that order be maintained, the lady closed the distance between them.
“You have to help. Before it’s too late. I can’t do anything here in this place, but I know you can. Only you can, dear…”
“Who?”
His body wouldn’t respond. He couldn’t do so much as blink; so helplessly, he watched the lady limp towards him. Only three feet away, he caught the glimpse of a sorrowful smile and eyes filled with a deep and unending grief.
“My son.”
