Morse lets his gaze drift back onto the water, to come to rest on the speck of a ship on the horizon. They have exhausted the easy topics, how Sam is doing now in France, the news of Mrs Strange’s baby and of Morse’s current governor, back at the house when they were having tea with Mrs Thursday, and silence is no longer theirs to command in easy companionship—perhaps it never was.

Summary

"He doesn’t have the power to make that call anymore of course but they ignore that as rain starts around them in earnest, a soft orchestra that falls in whispers onto the soil and the blades of wheat. It is almost peaceful, and when Fred stares at the fields stretching away silky smooth under the foreboding clouds, he almost sees what Morse means. But then he turns his head and finds Morse’s eyes closed, his head drooping onto his chest again."
When an arrest goes wrong, Morse and Thursday are stranded in the countryside with Morse hurt. They talk about the past, try to make sense of the present and grieve the things they lost, while waiting for help that may or may not arrive. One part Morse whump, one part Fred Thursday character study, and one part reflections on fatherhood and family. Set in Series 6 because I love suffering.
