Jakes drew himself up to his full height and took a threatening step forward, one hand clutching the cigarette too tightly, and the other resting on his cutlass. If anything, this only spurred the brat on further.
"Go ahead" Morse said, gesturing at the weapon, "Let's see how well that works out for you".
He took a deep breath, tried to block out unhelpful thoughts of stormy ocean blue eyes, and forced himself to remain somewhat calm.

This story takes place in something of an alternate universe. It explores what would have happened had Morse made different choices after his break-up with his former partner.
Please note: I have incredibly little knowledge of what it’s actually like to study at the University of Oxford. I did take a gander at what it’s like to do a defense of a paper. Hopefully this story wound up being accurate. Or thereabouts.
Also, the little research I’ve done on key events in ancient Greek history was thrown together from a bunch of different sources – mostly Wikipedia, along with some history websites from various schools. (Why lie?) I am far from the most knowledgeable person about the battles of Thermopylae and Marathon. I did some simple looking-up, and cobbled things together the best that I could.

And then, he found them.
A woman – Constance Morse, he assumed – lying on the floor; he knew from one look at her face that all hope was lost.

“Don’t- I…” Morse groaned from his place next to the wall. Even in the dim light, Max could see a gentle trickle of blood from where Morse’s brow had collided with the wall. Morse raised a shaking hand to his now wet forehead. “My head…”
“Yes, you’ve hit your head,” Max said as he crouched, wary of getting too close, given Morse’s previous reaction to his touch. “How about I take you to the lab and stitch you up, hm? Then I’ll give you a lift home.”
After Dr DeBryn finds Morse injured and disorientated by the side of a road in the dead of night, the two of them struggle to retrace Morse's steps to uncover what had happened to him that night.
