Summary
The aftermath of the Lady Matilda's case leads the dynamic duo to another face from Lewis' past, ultimately with far happier consequences than during that case. But it is a long road to get there; and first, they have to navigate through the shoals of tragedy and injustice from circumstances none of them have control over, deal with Robbie's misplaced sense of guilt, and give James a crash course in family and relationships.

Summary
James, for lack of a better word, enjoyed the Wolvercote Cemetery. It was a peaceful place of remembrance, just as it ought to be; and it was easy to tell that those who lay there had been well-loved, for the most part at least. So many graves were the flowers were always fresh…

It was – and he was rather annoyed that it shouldn’t be – no surprise that he was worried about the lad. James reminded him uncomfortably of Morse at times – gave too much to the job, never knew when to quit, was ready to kill himself if it just meant solving a case –

It wasn’t as if Robbie hadn’t had his suspicions. Over the course of his career, he had met all kind of folks – most of them decent, some of them not – and whether or not they were human had little, very little to do with that.

Summary
“When you were in Shetland?” Robbie glosses over the fact that James has admitted he had a fling with a man. But then, if Robbie knows how James feels about him, he must be aware of a few other things as well.
“When I got your email,” James looks up at Robbie, casual as he can manage, though it’s a struggle not to smile at the wide-eyed, incredulous look Robbie’s giving him.
“The day before yesterday?”
James gives up trying to suppress his grin. “Yeah.” If the hug in the airport hadn’t been worth thirty hours of air travel, watching the contours of Robbie’s face as he pieces together what James is saying would be.

"Aren't they sweet? Falling in love over the dead things," says Dr Hobson in 'One for Sorrow'.
What started as a one shot inspired by this quote has grown to a few more. This is cross posted from FF where a very kind reader suggested I share it here too. As always, I offer my thanks to the talented script writers for whose words I have borrowed. The typos are certainly all mine!

Summary
To say that James was against this would have been an understatement.
Yet Lewis had immediately accepted, even laughed a bit about it as he turned to him and said, “Remind me to tell you of the time Morse sent me undercover later. I had to be the porter for one of our posh colleges. And I got to win a cricket game!” -

Self-Flagelation
Noun: the action of flogging oneself, especially as a form of religious discipline. If anyone felt the burden of original sin it was James Hathaway. Catholic guilt was an understatement. It felt as though his whole life had been buoyed along by a steady undercurrent of guilt. Where it all came from was too hard to sort out but the thing about guilt is that it is always possible to find something to feel guilty about. Some tiny action of cruelty, a long past mistake, even an uncharitable thought. The reasons didn’t cause his guilt. The guilt found a reason.

Summary
After living in Oxford for decades, he really should have known better. Word travelled fast around here, especially if there was a hint of scandal to it.
