Jud was fucked. Now, he generally tried not to think such words anymore – praise God–, but, and praise God again, he was fucked.

The second he’d seen her, in that pretty dress, when she’d stepped into the shade, he was done for. Please, God, forgive him.

The absolute worst thing he could do would be to invite her over for tea. He would resolutely not be doing that.

*Spoiler Alert* He did, in fact, do that.

    Summary

He boxed a lot after it all happened. At the gym in town, in Samson’s garage. He watched re-runs of games taped by the guy he didn’t kill and he made things from felled wood. He boxed and he cheered teams he didn’t care about and he cut his hand on a rusty chisel he should’ve taken the time to scrape clean and he came to you in the rectory and showed you his bruised knuckles like you were a nurse come to scoop him up off the schoolyard.

You did scoop him up. You did bathe his hands. Let him slide his lap full of you in the clerk’s office. Only after the door was shut, though, the curtains drawn. You weren’t stupid. You knew some people had died. You knew some people were still alive. There was a cancer in this place, carved into the bedrock. You knew it’d never really be cut out.

A year into working on her PhD, the reader is transferred to a small town in upper New York in order to gather materials for her thesis on the restoration and conservation of religious texts.

Away from her family and friends, surrounded by a judgemental village and haunted by a gruesome past, she must show the faculty her research was worth something, all while being the object of curiosity of a priest with an equally troubled background: Father Jud Duplenticy.

Jud Duplenticy looks at her like she’s either an interesting problem or a vision from god. Maybe both. Either way Alanna Holt only knows one thing for certain; she’s never met a priest she could stand to be around more than a minute.
