Summary
He looked toward the boy.
He looked lost.
Lost-wasn't something Dutch was used to. It wasn't as easily soothed as a pat on the shoulder or a squeeze around the middle. He figured the kid wasn't one to know much about what comfort was, anyhow.
He stood without a word, felt the kid's eyes following him all the way to where the body still hang on display. Words were whispered to a guard and then, that hat was held delicately in his hands like it was some trophy.
"I don't know much about fatherhood," he said, leaning down to be eye-level with the boy. "My daddy died when I was too young to really get it."
Dutch stood again, propping the hat up on the edge of an empty hitching post. He looked back at the boy, revolver in hand. "But I know enough to know that whatever he was, wasn't it." He pressed the gun carefully into the kid's hands. Guided his thumb to cock it back, wrap his finger around the trigger.
"Whaddya say we give him the sendoff he deserves?"
They left, hand-in-hand, fresh gunshot in the center of the hat on the kid's head.*Pre-game oneshots following Arthur growing up as an outlaw. Arthur+John & Dutch/Hosea are the main relationships.
