His work, though seen as gruesome by most, including the other agents of the A.I.A, is far tamer than what he used to do, and he much prefers it that way. He hardly interacts with members of other sectors in the agency, but when Fatui action begins rising and members of the Archon family, the very foundation of the A.I.A, find themselves troubled, Xiao ends up forced into a partnership with someone he never thought he'd ever see again.

“Barbatos, when will you settle down?” Rex Lapis had asked him with a smile in his voice.
“Never!” A voice declared loudly. “I refuse to have a mate and I refuse to settle down. No one will ever tame the wind. I go where I please and do what I want, whenever I want. I refuse ever to have a mate.”
Xiao backed away slowly. He scowled and teleported to a secluded spot in the mountains. He summoned his spear and slashed at a boulder, breaking it into pieces just like his mate had done to him.
No more. It was fitting that this should go the way everything else in his life has. Any hope or wish or any good thing he wanted always ended up like this. Broken and shattered to pieces.
Xiao scowled and kicked the shards of rock. If this is what his mate wants, this is what he shall have. Xiao would not interfere.
There would be no happy ending for him. Never again.
