    The families of Gun and Goo form an alliance uniting their two heirs in marriage; Gun and Goo meet at age nine, become officially engaged at fifteen, and marry at sixteen. Goo becomes pregnant during his first sexual encounter with Gun, and when their son turns four—and Goo is twenty—Goo disappears. Shintaro, Gun’s uncle, tells Gun that Goo was ambushed by family enemies and died. Unable to bear staying in Japan after hearing this, Gun moves to Korea, leaving his son behind. Two years later, Gun sees Goo again, but Goo—now a kendo instructor—remembers nothing.
