Objectively she wasn't wrong about that. His eyes stung. It was different for him though. Four years ago he stayed in the Cloud Recesses for the guest lectures and was thrown out by Lan Qiren in the end. How would he survive living there?
Or: Wei Wuxian marries into the Lan Sect expecting to be miserable but slowly learns to make it and the people of the Lan Sect his home. And maybe he'll even get to keep it for once.

So, Xie Lian made a home on a mountain, plagued with white flowers that sprouted from his blood and his footsteps, twisting along every pathway. Another ghost came to live with him, between the flowers and the trees and winding river Xie Lian kept thinking of drowning in. He said his name was San Lang. It wasn’t. It was actually Hua Cheng, but Xie Lian didn’t know how to bring that up. It wasn’t as important as everything else—gardens, flowers, silver butterflies, and sorting out his dreams from his perilous reality. Hua Cheng made space, and Xie Lian let him.
Dead god, very dead follower. It was almost funny.
He wasn’t sure what to do, seeing as he didn't plan to ascend once more, or plan to hold power over a kingdom again. Xie Lian wasn’t staying forever. The mountain would open up, and he would leave to become something catastrophic. Or he would finally disperse. Who was he to say?
(or: xie lian dies, becomes a calamity, ascends to the heavens against his wishes, and finally makes his life flourish between his thumbs and a ghost’s smile.)
