There was sand between her fingers. Under her, all around her. The sky was a pale blue, completely clear. The beach was littered with the freshly healed bodies of three devils, herself included. Denji was sitting with her. Reze didn’t know why. Maybe he had hit his head and given himself a concussion, conveniently forgetting that Reze would and could kill him—had, actually, only a few hours ago.

Megumi was what any level-headed sorcerer would call a waste of potential. Because, really, the kid could be something bigger than life if he tried. But the only time Megumi truly applied himself was when he was trying to get bloodstains out of his sweater, when he was trying not to ask Tsumiki why she chose him, or when he was staring Gojo dead in the eyes the same night that the bastard came into his room without knocking, seeing him press a razor into his thigh with practiced sincerity. Yeah. Calling him a waste of potential was as gratifying as killing himself would be.

Wei Wuxian knew that turning to resentful energy as a cultivation style would be unorthodox. He also, of course, knew that it would be understudied and therefore hit-or-miss, resulting in plenty of issues and lapses in judgement. What he didn’t realize, actually, was that empty feeling in his stomach; the way his mouth watered when blood was in front of him; the sound of his heart thundering when people fought and raised their voices; and, ha, how it felt to put his teeth into something living.

Summary
Denji wanted to run away with a girl who killed him. Or, well, he wanted to run away with someone who loved him. Liked him. Denji would have rather stayed in the city, but it wasn’t safe—that was true—and Reze said she liked him with or without the chainsaw coming out of his head. This might be a betrayal to Miss Makima, and maybe to the top-knot, and maybe even to Power—but Denji wanted to feel the butterflies from before. He wanted to pull more flowers from his mouth if it meant Reze would smile even the tiniest smile. So, here they were.
(or: denji and reze manage to get halfway across japan. it’s almost far enough.)

There are fundamental differences between cultivators and the mediocre, of course.
One of the most common differences is body warmth. The golden core thrums with heat, rendering threats of hypothermia rare and mild— although that does not make it impossible, especially for cultivator kids turned street rats. Wei Wuxian remembers reading poetry of how romantic the thought of loving someone who will always run a fever for you. He showed it to Jiang Cheng once and choked on lake water laughing when Jiang Cheng immediately shoved him off the port. It ruined the book, of course.
Wei Wuxian had remembered that poem trapped in that cave, infection wrecking through his body. He felt the heat of his own skin turning numb and thought that freezing and burning to death felt the same.

the unnerving sensation of not being known, liking it that way, but being so utterly alone in your own creation is so fucking spectacular in this fic. hoenstly. i will never recover. someone call an ambulance (joking) AND. DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THE RELATIONSHIPS. DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THE anyways so im started! im listening, watching, yapping, sat! edge of my seat! BODY HORROR. the horrors of his cultivation! the horrors he must hide! the wounds he must tend to! ON HIS OWN! FOREVER. god. don’t even get me started on him. and his suffering. and everything he did to save others even when it killed him. wei wuxian during the sunshot campaign (and its aftermath) has to be one of my favorite versions of him. both to read about and write. he is so. everything. im gonna say it. he’s everything. and the way you captured his thoughts and choices?? phenomenal. you did that so well. he is described in such a way that i want to bring myself back into the mdzs fandom just to write another sunshot fic. i love that he describes resentment as warm. i have never seen it described that way before and it just scratches my brain so much. i fucking love it. thank you so much for sharing this. loved. hearted. fucking perfect.

i fucking love this. i love this so much more than my words can capture. i am such a sucker for second-person fics. it feels so detached in a gorgeous way and i can never get enough of them. this fic captured the revelation of the new comic so well! the way you characterized mizi and her thought process was just perfect, so beautiful. the way mizi’s trait/purpose list (1, 2, 3) slowly changes as the fic goes on is also an amazing narrative choice and really drives the reader forward. sua asking “are you scared of dying?” is such a genius aspect to the narrative, and i love you for it. thank you for writing this and sharing it with the crowd. distant cheering from the mizi fans!!! <33

He Xuan shakes their head miserably, looking intently at her. She’s smiling encouragingly, the expression softened and sweet, her eyes glimmering. Their gaze slides down further, to her throat. They want to kiss it, make it theirs; they want to rip it out with their teeth. “What’s wrong with you?” they murmur half-heartedly, but they mean: What’s wrong with me?
Shi Qingxuan doesn’t falter for a moment. “Breathe,” she repeats. “You just got overwhelmed all of a sudden.” He Xuan is overwhelmed, but it’s far from sudden – the pressure’s been building and building to a raging crescendo, and they never had the sense to calm it. Now, it’s far too late.
He Xuan grapples with their desire for revenge as their feelings for Shi Qingxuan shift.
