"It doesn't fucking matter what you were trying to do, Bruce," he said again. "I don't care that you were trying to disarm me and prevent me from taking a life—I don't care. You still chose what was more important to you, and I wasn't it."

His eyes stung and the thick, jagged scar at his throat ached.

"I just wanted you to come home, son," he said. "I never meant to—"

    Summary

He was good. He was good, yeah. Jason believed it— or at least wanted to, even if Bruce never would. But he believed that he was doing something right. He believed he was something more. That he mattered.

    Like a son.

Only to find out that Bruce had only ever seen him as another child soldier in a war he didn't realise he was fighting. He didn't matter to Bruce— not in the way he thought he did.

The glass case that displayed the suit he died in stares back at him, the plaque glinting faintly under the dim lights. Unmoving. Uncaring.

It isn’t a tribute. It’s a coffin of glass and guilt, holding the boy he used to be, a body Bruce couldn't let go of.

It’s one of the reasons why Jason despised coming here— to the Cave, the Manor. Because he knows it’ll just be waiting for him, mocking him in ways no one else can.

Yeah, it's been years. But it never got better.

    Never will.

Jason never liked the glass case. It isn't a tribute. It’s a coffin for someone who will never return— even if he’s standing right there.

    Summary

By the time he arrives at the address, a hidden away cross between two streets in a darkly lit neighborhood, there's prickles of anticipation in his stomach. He's not quite sure what he's expecting, but it's definitely not the Red Hood standing next to a group of knocked out people—wait, no, those aren't humans, his ring pings as he comes closer.

Hal tries not to stare and nods at Jason, who is standing there with that stupid helmet on, arms crossed, but at first glance unharmed, and then kneels to scan the almost-definitely aliens with his ring.

“They’re alive,” Hood growls, and Hal raises an eyebrow.

“I assumed,” he says, weary. “Mind telling me what the hell happened here?”

(Or, Hal gets a late-night phone call. Jason attempts to get some advice.)

    Summary

Jason keeps finding ghosts of himself in other kids.

And can't really seem to escape this whole magic thing.

    Or the whole dying thing.

(And time does not wait for you to get back on your feet. Or your head screwed on straight).
