    Summary

In bed with Rose, a hunger roaring inside him that he knows won’t be sated that night, Shane wishes he had never walked across that parking lot in Regina, had never introduced himself to Ilya Rozanov.

The universe gives him his wish.

What would his life look like, if he’d never trekked across that empty, windy parking lot in Saskatchewan eight years ago to introduce himself to Rozanov? If he’d never allowed himself to get caught by that crooked smile, if they hadn’t spent the years since chasing each other across hotel rooms and empty apartments and two countries? If he didn’t know that Ilya kept tuna salad pre-made in his fridge, if he’d never had the thought I think he might know me better than anyone else cut across his mind, forbidden but no less true for it?

There's no good way to be stuck in an elevator. Not when you're stuck in an elevator with someone who treats being annoying as an art form he wants to perfect, and definitely not when that person is your son's rival who you've hated for years.

But, when Yuna finds herself stuck in an elevator with Ilya Rozanov, she realises there's more to the story than she'd seen.

“Why did you want me to meet you here today?” Shane asked. When he’d heard the request, he’d had the same thought as Jared. Was he trying to rub it in? One last chance to retaliate for a long ago rejection?

Shane had almost made it to Rozanov’s room that night in the hotel in Toronto. But when the elevator doors opened, Shane’s feet had stayed glued to the ground.

He’d been so afraid of ruining everything, only to have it ruined for him barely a year later.

Shane does not hook up with Ilya in Toronto. Six years later, his hockey career is long over and he has found a new calling that puts his media training, and his pretty face, to good use.

Consider this a remix of sorts.

    Summary

Shane Hollander is a man who thrives on structure, routine, the solid ground of a ten-year plan. Ilya likes that about him, likes the embracing squeeze of having a life organized in tandem with Shane.

No one would call Ilya a man who thrives on structure. But it’s there, if not in his DNA then in the patterns of his brain. A call-and-response of: they do this, I do that.

When Ilya’s life is flayed open for the world to dissect, how will they push-and-pull their way back towards what was once a well-organized life?

“I thought we could go through the schedules and figure out what days we’ll be in the same cities this season, or when either of us have a couple of days off in a row. Maybe make a shared calendar, so we c—”

“A sex calendar? Your parents are arriving in thirty minutes, and you are proposing making a sex calendar?” Oh, this was delicious. He’d be able to eat out on this for years, if Shane was willing to give him that long.

“It’s not a sex calendar! It’s just … when we might be able to see each other,” he finished, already sounding defeated.

“And what are you planning on doing when we are seeing each other? Not fucking?”

    Summary

Ilya in 2014 had no idea his time with Hollander was so limited — something that Ilya in 2016 knows all too well.

Ilya in 2016 is also playing hockey like shit. The version of himself on the television misses an easy shot, and the commentators tear him apart for it. Ilya, watching from his bed, is inclined to agree with them. His father’s decline is almost a blessing this month, when his usual level of vitriol would be for once so entirely deserved.

He’s thinking about all of this, beer in hand, when there’s a knock on his door.
