Summary
Alex is lying in a bed, hooked up to a heart monitor, tubes sticking out of his arms. He looks like he’s gone through an entire ordeal, only, as soon as Henry walks through the door, his eyes go wide, and he’s grinning, a big, toothy smile, bits of cotton sticking out from the corners of his mouth, and sleepily slurring out something that sounds suspiciously like Henry’s name.
His gaze darts to the doctor.
Just as he’s about to ask, there’s a flutter of a movement, the racing sound of the heart monitor going crazy. He snaps his eyes over to look at the monitor—doesn’t understand anything other than the fact that Alex’s heart is going crazy enough to set off several alarms, the beeping quick and scary, and all the information Henry just forced upon himself comes racing to the forefront of his mind as he scurries further into the room, wide eyed and panicked. He looks between the doctor and the nurse, but they’re holding back smiles as they look at each other, barely paying any mind to the monitor.

Summary
Suddenly, David scrambles in his arms and stretches his upper body out to bite at the sleeve of an innocent person exiting the coffee shop. Henry lets out an embarrassing squeak of surprise and stares at David in shock.
“David!” he admonishes at the same time that the stranger says, “Oh, hello little guy.”
Henry looks up to make eye contact with the stranger David has physically latched onto to offer apologies, and feels a swarm of bees overtake his stomach and fight to crawl up his ribcage to his heart. The man is unfairly beautiful.
“Oh, oh my god, I am so sorry about him. He’s trained, I don’t know why he’s behaving like this.”
Alex effectively melts and coos at the puppy, scratching his head and behind his ears.
“You’re such a good boy, the bestest of the boys.”
“No, he is being absolutely rude. What could you possibly want from him, Davey?”
“Maybe he’s looking for a second dad.”

Henry had been so excited when he’d announced it to their little group, gathered one evening at the pub, that David was going to be coming over to the States. He’d gone on and on—an impossibly soft look in his eyes—about how much he missed him, and how great it would be to finally have him here, and how everyone would love him.
Alex has his doubts. He’s not jealous, because that would be absurd. Henry’s one of his best friends. It’s not— It’s not like that between them. He’s happy for Henry, truly.
He just doesn’t understand why Henry wouldn’t previously have mentioned that his boyfriend is a fucking shapeshifter.
(Alex isn’t exactly thrilled to meet Henry’s boyfriend David—obviously a shapeshifter—but what really bothers him is the fact that David refuses to show his human face.)

Or when Henry’s grandfather had sent him a special invitation for a dinner at the palace, and he was very clear on the matter of Alex not being invited.
Henry will put up with anything someone tries to do to him, and he had for almost a quarter of a century, but Henry will not put up with someone hurting Alex.

And maybe Alex is a little jealous — his own novel generated a surprising amount of success last year after going viral online, but it just wasn't cut out for the type of buzz Fox was receiving. So Alex jumps at the chance to meet Henry at a book signing, despite knowing very little about the man himself.
