“Lukas, your friends could still be out there!”
For a moment, Jesse’s smile is genuine, wide across his shadowy face. His joy is secondhand, doesn’t fit quite right.
“I know.” He doesn’t. His eyes light up anyway.
“And that means I -- I gotta go after them!”
The cold bites his cheeks. Jesse stays quiet for a beat too long.
Lukas knows what he’s thinking. He always does. Jesse can just make out his frown in the torchlight.
“They might need me, Jesse.”
Jesse wishes he’d kept his big mouth shut.

Jesse’s been dreading today. Love and feelings aren’t things he’s exactly experienced in, so he intends to stick to the plans he’s had his heart set on and hopeful to succeed in making his Valentine’s Day special with the one person he wants most. That is until his plans are suddenly scrapped and replaced with new ones when the person of his desires has unexpectedly fallen ill on the one day he’d had all his special plans made for! All Jesse can hope now is that he’s able to express how he truly feels to one of the people who’s been so understanding and supportive of him after all this time.
