Summary
“Can I help you?” Tommy asked, peering up and down the street to see if, perhaps, they needed help, wondering why they'd knock on his door out of all the houses on this street.
“Are you Thomas Kinard?” the boy asked, his voice a little deeper than Tommy had anticipated.
“Tommy. Yeah.”
The two kids exchanged a look.
“I'm Benny. This is Holly. Patrick Kinard is our father.”
Tommy's hand reached out for the door frame, trying to hold his body up as his knees threatened to give out. The world around him shifted, a violent, seismic tremor that ran through his very core. For a moment, he couldn't breathe.
And then Benny said, “You're our brother.”Series

Summary
And Chim just couldn't not say it because the sandwich tasted like ashes on his tongue and his ears were ringing and all he could think about was how Buck had been so happy lately and how Buck was going to be so unhappy soon.
“Are you in love with Eddie?” he blurted out, completely steamrolling over whatever else Tommy had been saying and stopping him dead in his tracks, making him almost choke on his stupidly fancy BLT.
Once Tommy had stopped coughing, his eyes still a little watery and his voice still a little raw, he croaked out, “Excuse me?”***
Tommy is Buck's boyfriend. Eddie is Buck's partner. It's really not that complicated.

Summary
There was a certainty in Eddie, a stability, a finality – the knowledge that six weeks, six months, six years from now, they would still be Buck and Eddie the way they'd always been. BuckandEddie.
He wasn't sure anymore what he would do without Eddie, thought if he did lose Eddie, he might just stop existing altogether, the two of them too intertwined to separate in any way that mattered.
And yet.
Buck knew he was a little bit in love with Eddie, but he didn't know, had never considered the meaning of it. The implication. Had never thought that there was an implication.
Not until Tommy.
And now he wasn't quite sure what to do with that.***
Buck has a series of revelations.

Summary
Tommy, more than anything, was lonely.
On the first day of high school, he walked through the double doors of the ugly glass and concrete block in Boyle Heights and knew, with a certainty he'd never had before in his life, that he would hate every second of it.
The other kids didn't like him very much – Piggy Kinard, they sometimes called him – because he was tall and large and always smelled of cigarettes, as if the smoke had stitched itself into the very seams of his clothing.
Tommy would later not remember which teacher had told his parents about the name-calling, would only remember the faint look of disgust on his father's face and the rough hand in the nape of his neck.
“Respect is something that is earned,” he told Tommy.***
Tommy begins. Then, Tommy begins again. And again. And again. And again.
